Stop, commemorate, and listen this Remembrance Day

The public will be stopped in their tracks this Friday as the Last Post is played by buglers stationed at significant landmarks across the country.

This street activation led by several State Branches of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSLA) is aimed at encouraging Australians to remember to remember at 11 AM on 11 November as they go about their day-to-day activities in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The playing of the moving ‘Last Post’ at 10:59 AM will precede one minute of silence at 11:00 AM, which will be broken by ‘The Rouse’, the short bugle which calls soldiers to their duties.

Speaking on behalf of RSL NSW, RSL Victoria, RSL SA, and RSL WA which have organised this commemorative activation, RSL Australia President, Greg Melick said:

“Although Remembrance Day, unlike ANZAC Day, is not a public holiday this should not reduce its significance.

“Remembrance Day commemorates the sacrifices of those who died serving their country, Remembrance Day is also a time in which to acknowledge the sacrifice of those left behind to mourn.

“It is not enough to remember the dead if we cannot recognise the pain of those who lived to morn them. As the Last Post sounds across the nation this Remembrance Day we should think of the sacrifice of generations of Australians. Not just remember those who died or were injured during their service, but also recall the tears shed by those left behind,” Greg Melick said.

In total, buglers located at 29 intersections and landmarks will sound the Last Post as part of the RSL’s street activation this Remembrance Day.
