RSL Australia Welcomes relaxation in earning limits

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSLA) has welcomed the Commonwealth Government’s relaxation of earning limits impacting on veteran and other pensions.

The decision means that eligible Veterans and pensioners can earn more income from working without reducing their pension, just in time to take advantage of seasonal jobs. Eligible Australians will have the opportunity to engage in the workforce if they chose to do so at a time of workforce shortages without losing any of their income support payments.

They will immediately be able to earn an additional $4000 before their government payments are reduced, with the maximum work bonus income bank being lifted from $7800 to $11,800.

RSL Australia President Greg Melick welcomed the Government’s announcement and said it would provide valuable assistance for many veterans who are on fixed incomes and hurting from cost-of-living pressures.

They could employ their skills to improve their quality of life and that of their families, as well as help address the skills shortage, particularly in seasonal industries.

Greg Melick said the flexibility would be attractive for veterans who perhaps didn’t want to work fulltime but would be happy to take up seasonal jobs.

“Many employers are calling out for experienced workers and veterans have a range of skills developed over their years of service,” he said.

“As a result of the Government’s decision, they can now take advantage of the income bank credit provision and accept short-term employment over the festive season and the summer period.

“As well as the economic benefits, meaningful employment is also positive for veterans’ mental health and general wellbeing, so this decision is sensible and welcomed,” Greg Melick said.

Year to date the RSL Veterans’ Employment Program has provided some form of employment assistance to over 447 program participants. The program is open to all veterans and their immediate family members and provides assistance across a range of career support services.
