RSL National President Greg Melick Retires After 6.5 Years of Transformative Leadership

MEDIA RELEASE

The Returned & Services League of Australia’s (RSL) National President, Major General (Ret.) Greg Melick retires tomorrow (Thursday, 16 October) after a six-and-a-half-year term in office.

Greg Melick assumed the National Presidency in May 2019 and, with the National Board and management team, transformed RSL Australia into a modern, influential voice for the veteran community.

His presidency was defined by proactive engagement with the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, transforming the RSL from a traditional commemorative body into a sophisticated policy advocate. The RSL assisted in developing the Royal Commission's Terms of Reference and is now engaging directly with the Prime Minister's Implementation Taskforce.

Recognising the need to serve a new generation of veterans, Greg Melick and the National Board spearheaded a comprehensive modernisation effort as well as enhancing relationships with the State Branches and key stakeholders. The RSL's research initiatives, including the major Middle East Area of Operations Scoping Study, demonstrated commitment to evidence-based advocacy.

The RSL has significantly expanded its role in national defence discussions, becoming a key voice on Australia's defence preparedness, ADF recruitment and retention, and sovereign defence industrial capacity.

Greg Melick’s leadership elevated the RSL's international profile through diplomatic engagement and participation in global forums, culminating in recognition as an Officer of France's Ordre national du Mérite on Anzac Day 2025.

His presidency represents the fifth-longest presidential term since the RSL's 1916 establishment, and is marked by increased national advocacy, enhanced government relationships, and modernised service delivery. During his tenure, RSL membership has increased steadily to more than 153,000.

None of this would have been achievable without the support of a dedicated National Board, a hard-working management team and RSL members.

"Throughout my tenure, I have endeavoured to promote the interests of veterans and their families while ensuring their welfare and Australia's defence remained uppermost in our advocacy priorities," Greg Melick said.

"I am confident that the RSL is well-positioned to continue its vital mission of supporting veterans while contributing to Australia's national security discussions."

Greg Melick’s last official duty will be to preside over the League’s Annual General Meeting tomorrow, with the new President then assuming the role.
