RSL Fundraising to Provide Care Packages for ADF Personnel Deployed Overseas

MEDIA RELEASE

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) has launched a fundraising appeal for its Australian Forces Overseas Fund to send care packages to Australian Defence personnel serving overseas.

The appeal will help fund 400 packages of treats and messages for Australian service men and women deployed on military operations overseas.

Care packages will go to Australian Defence Force personnel currently serving in the Middle East, South Sudan, Egypt, and other overseas theatres.

RSL Australia National President Greg Melick said each $25 donation would enable RSL Australia to send a care package filled with Aussie treats as well as a letter of appreciation to one of our ADF men or women serving overseas.

“It is a small but powerful way to say thank you for their service, and by supporting those serving now, we are honouring the past service of our veterans.

“For more than a century, Australians have sent care packages to troops serving far from home. From WWI to today’s missions around the world, these small bundles of comfort have carried snacks, letters, and a powerful message: “We’re thinking of you. Please come home safely”.

Greg Melick said that during the Vietnam War, the RSL sent Christmas parcels to members of the Australian Army, providing comfort and a reminder of home.

“This initiative led to the establishment of the Australian Forces Overseas Fund (AFOF), ensuring ongoing support for our deployed personnel, and this tradition continues today.

“Twice a year, RSL Australia, with the help of dedicated volunteers, prepares care packages for Australians serving overseas. It's an enormous undertaking, only made possible by donations and the work of volunteers who come together to pack the care packages at the 39 Operational Support Battalion Randwick Barracks in Sydney.

“It’s a mission entirely dependent on the generosity of the public, through donations to the AFOF.

“Whether you’re honouring a loved one, a veteran, or the spirit of service itself, your donation continues this proud legacy,” Greg Melick said.

The RSL packs and sends around 400 care packages twice a year. The RSL is seeking donations to fund the September packages, which should reach troops in time for Christmas.

“Each $25 donation brings us one step closer to this goal, and donors can include a special tribute or message for the troops that will be displayed on the Supporters page on the RSL website.

“The packs are really welcomed by our service men and women, with many sending back messages of appreciation,” Greg Melick said.

This year’s AFOF appeal has the theme of Honour the past. Support the present, and donations are tax-deductible.
