Veterans upskill and retrain for a new in-demand career in cyber security

Through the RSL Veterans’ Employment Program we were proud to attend and support the graduation of 18 veterans and spouses who recently graduated from Australia’s first Veteran Cyber Academy.

This pilot Academy delivered by SANS Institute in partnership with Allectum, offered fully funded positions in the 16-week immersive course. It has proven that a diverse range of ADF veterans with no cyber security experience, can be trained with industry-recognised certifications to develop real-world cyber security careers.

As part of the program graduates had their CVs reviewed, received soft skill interview training and received industry briefings on the current state of cyber security.  They attended careers fairs and were provided opportunities to engage directly with employers. During the course, Allectum worked alongside the candidates to assist in their transition to the workforce.

The Academy has shown that it can help stem the cyber skills shortage by enabling veterans to reskill and continue to serve the security of the nation in the cyber world.

The RSL Veterans’ Employment Program will continue to support the Academy, promoting it through its network, Job Opportunities channel and by encouraging program participants to apply.

Suzie Michaelis, National Program Manager of RSL Veterans’ Employment Program said,It is fantastic to see working partnerships that create avenues and provide opportunities for our veterans and their families. The Veteran Cyber Academy is ensuring its participants have the right skills and Cyber training to meet any civilian and defence-related employment criteria. We'd like to see the industry collaborating more to create educational programs like the Academy has done. This would help to address some of the transition challenges facing both the veteran community and civilian employment sector by providing an educational and rewarding pathway.”
