I am immensely proud that the RSL has been one of the most recognisable institutions in Australian community life for generations. The RSL’s heritage is precious, but its future depends on trust and relevance. Today, the veteran community is far more diverse than it once was, and the challenges veterans and their families face are often complex. There are around 530,000 veterans in Australia, and behind every veteran is a family that served too, not in uniform, but in sacrifice - the relocations, the deployments, the uncertainty. The RSL must continue to be the place where veterans find connection, families find support and communities find a partner in civic wellbeing. A stronger and inclusive RSL is good for veterans, good for communities and good for the nation’s social fabric. The RSL will advocate strongly for the entire veteran community — for respect, for our sacred places, for evidence-based support and services, and for proper funding for mental health care. We will continue to press for faster claims processing and national consistency, so that access to services does not depend on postcode. We will tell our stories: stories about the value that veterans and their families add to our communities, and how their skills, resilience, teamwork, and commitment strengthen Australia every day. Stories of how our values of duty, sacrifice, and service endure long after the uniform is retired. In this newsletter, you’ll read about issues we have spoken up on in the past month. You’ll also meet some incredible people in our community who are dedicated to better outcomes for veterans and their families, as well as sub-branches undertaking important local projects — preserving memory, honouring service, and keeping the ANZAC spirit alive for future generations.
